My story about a very thoughtful card maker and the community that appreciates her!
MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW, August 2010
"Card Auntie's Wonderful Workshop is an inspirational illustrated story about Card Auntie, a wonderful, creative old woman who creates and sends thoughtful cards to all sorts of people giving them special notes of appreciation, thanks, or cheer. One day Card Auntie has a terrible accident, tripping over her cat, Zip, while carrying boxes of her cards. She breaks her arm and has to convalesce under the care and supervision of grumpy (but well meaning) Nurse Hopkins. Oh dear! Card Auntie worries that no one will receive her wonderful cards while she is unable to do her special, creative work. A marvelous surprise solution takes shape from the people of Card Auntie's community, and everything does work out for the best in the end. The painstakingly detailed colored pencil illustrations of Card Auntie's Wonderful Workshop will keep young readers searching for their favorite little orange snail and other guides and cues to the story. Card Auntie's Wonderful Workshop has a gentle tone and a message of kindness returned that will resonate with young and old alike." http://www.midwestbookreview.com/cbw/aug_10.htm#Picturebook
I live in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., where I was born and raised. I have studied drawing and painting. I worked for 35 years as a Federal employee, including 31 years as a Congressional staffer. I retired to fulfill my lifelong goal of finishing college and in '08 earned a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from Vermont College of UI&U in Montpelier, VT. After "Card Auntie's Wonderful Workshop" was published, I set about looking for audiences that might enjoy the story. Little did I know that I was about to become a card maker myself! In June 2010, I read in a magazine about Operation Write Home and the wonderful work they do sending cards and encouragement to our deployed troops. I started making cards and have been a volunteer for OWH ever since. I am grateful to "Card Auntie" for leading me to OWH and card making. I like to be busy and help others! As Card Auntie says, "There is always somebody, somewhere, who needs a bit of cheer or a pat on the back"!
